Wichita State University hosted the SunPowered Student Challenge hub on April 2 and high school students were invited to compete at the annual solar competition. Students were to prepare for real-time performance challenges, present findings, and prove their knowledge to electric industry professionals in this statewide competition.
Senior Eve Fuller and freshman Kisaac Hubert attended and competed as a team. Before the competition they prepared in class by doing a packet and learning about solar panels, practiced getting certain voltages with the solar panels, and learned the mathematical equations to calculate voltage. In one of the competitions, they had to build a house and set up solar panels for three periods of time throughout the day. In the next competition, they had to calculate how much it would take to power an average house with a target of six volts. In the last competition, they were paired with another team to generate the most power.
Fuller and Hubert placed 1st trophy in the Team Brand SunPowered Student Challenge competition. Additionally, they placed 1st in team collaboration. Overall, they placed 2nd at the SunPowered Student Challenge and received a trophy. They each brought home three medals for their placings.
