Mr. Gary Pingel grew up in a small farming community in Nebraska, where most of the parents had not attended college, so many of his classmates would be first-generation college students. Pingel’s parents were not well off enough to pay for his schooling, but he was able to attend on a track scholarship, which paid for his first two years.

Why Apply? Day is a yearly activity that Beloit High staff members participate in. The purpose is to encourage seniors at Beloit High to apply to college. This activity ties in with the seniors’ Apply Kansas Day, which is on Oct 4.

Neither of these days are used as an effort to push students toward a four-year college, but an effort to push them to believe they can go further with their education in numerous ways. Staff members participating write down why they applied to college and are encouraged to wear or bring some sort of item to represent their college.
