On Oct. 28, senior Abby Porter went on stage as a national finalist for her FFA proficiency. A few minutes later, Porter was named the National Winner for Proficiency in Veterinary Science. She had to go through interviews and judging to advance to nationals. Her proficiency involves working at the Solomon Valley Veterinary Clinic. She received this award by filling out an application about her job and work experiences. Her duties at her job consist of giving medications, assisting with surgeries, laundry, dishes, cleaning kennels, checking in patients, helping with clients, and feeding and watering animals. Her favorite part about what she does is helping clients and assisting with certain surgeries such as ACL tears and pyometra surgeries. She has been accepted into K-State to major in animal science with an emphasis in pre-veterinary medicine in hopes of becoming a small or large veterinarian in rural Western Kansas.
