Last week, Ms. Catrina Wilson’s art class was visited by PJ Stauffer, a Beloit High graduate and current graduate teaching assistant who instructs art classes at Fort Hays State University.
Stauffer taught the students about two different art styles. Stauffer taught about jelly pads, which are gel printing plates used to copy images and print them onto other surfaces. Stauffer also taught about creating cyanotopes, which is a type of art that uses just water, two chemicals, and sunlight to create images. Stauffer showed students how to use the jelly pads and explained the process of how the iron and cyanide compounds in the cyanotope mix and oxidize with light. Then, students had the opportunity to use jelly pads to create texture patterns, collages, and other types of art. Towards the end of the presentation, students got to witness a first-hand creation of some cyanotope art.
