On Wednesday, October 22, Beloit High hosted a Service Learning Day. The morning featured five events: door decorating, pumpkin decorating, SAFE driving, CPR training, and a presentation on school changes and other relevant information for freshmen, sophomores and seniors.
The juniors took the ACT WorkKeys test that same morning. The purpose of the test was to measure the students’ real-world skills that employers are looking for in the work industry. Joel Fuller, a junior at BHS, said, “I’m really glad we took the test. It’s going to help me find a career that fits me better in the future.”
Additionally, each PRIDE Time class participated in a service-learning opportunity that afternoon. Classes undertook various projects, which included: doing activities with residents at the Residential Care Center and Hilltop, building display frames for the fire department’s maps, transporting displays for the Isle of Lights, helping with projects at churches, painting parking stall lines and fire hydrants in Glasco, moving items for the Historical Society, painting at the fairgrounds, helping prepare children’s program materials at Port Library, window cleaning and decorating, picking up trash, and cleaning bleachers.
“Service Learning Day is a lot of work to plan and prepare, but it’s always one of my favorite days. It’s like giving our wonderful community a big ‘thank you’ for all they do to support our school and students. You always end the day feeling grateful and proud of what we accomplished together,” stated Josie Burke, the Service Learning Coordinator.
A new project was taken on by Mrs. Deb Martin’s PRIDE, which painted parking stall lines and fire hydrants throughout Glasco, Kan. “It felt good to help out the town and the fire department so they could see their fire hydrants and made it look nicer,” said Colton Jeardoe, a senior at BHS and part of Martin’s PRIDE.
